Summary

Hemophilia is mostly an inherited disease. People who have this disease have little or have no protein that clots an injury externally or internally. These proteins work with platelets. Platelets are small blood cell fragments that form in the bone marrow—a sponge-like tissue in the bones. Platelets play a major role in blood clotting. When blood vessels are wounded, the proteins help platelets stick together to stop cuts on the vessels and stop bleeding. It is very rare to get Hemophilia instead of inheriting it. You can acquire Hemophilia when antibodies attack the protein that makes the clots in your bloodstream. Hemophilia can be mild, moderate, or severe, depending on how much protein that makes the clotting, is in your blood. It occurs mostly in males.
